Finally, I have got a place sorted. I put the deposit down on a flat/apartment this afternoon, and am very pleased with it, I must say. I saw a few tiny boxes that appealed to me not one bit, and also saw some larger ones that were of tolerable size, but either had no/teeny windows, or were in a tower block that meant you had 10 foot of air and a brick wall as a view. All this for around $800...
Shockingly, one flat came up that seemed really very cool. It is a bachelor pad (bedsit) and has an outside space, amazingly. That staggered me. From going from hardly having windows in my price range, to having a huge 8 foot square double glazed one, with a door next to it leading onto a 400sq foot wooden deck... Oh, which happens to be on the edge of a hill, and look three floors down over a park. What? Where did that come from? I was the second person to see it, and I went on the basis that it had to suck the chud monkey in a big way for me not to take it on the spot. Even with the (essential) extra of a designated parking spot - $100 a month, but that ends up being inside and so not having any of that scraping the ice/4 foot of snow off thing - it is still only $830.
It was dirty (the previous tenant was a pig), but a reasonable size, for the market and what it was. But I missed having any outside space so much in Stroud that it pretty much hits the mark. It is a pretty cool pad, and while not furnished, I have found that a guy that I know already works for a certain Swedish furniture store and can get significant *cough*discount*cough*...
Aces. I should be able to get all I need (basically a sofa bed, a comfy chair and a desk/table or something) for probably a lot less than $500. Being as furnished (yet smaller) places were going for upwards of $950 for a twelve month tenancy, I am still saving. Even so, it is still about $200 a month less than I was paying in England...
So I'm happy. I fly to Spain on Monday for a weeks work, and then on to England on the 28th of November. I return back to Toronto to move in on the 6th (or maybe the day after if I haven't managed to sort out a bed). Then I shall take pictures and show you all what it is like.
